Pendle Winter Series 2024 – 2025
The Pendle Winter Series is fast approaching so we thought it would be useful to circulate a note to share some information about it.
The series follows the dual slalom format, similar to our Thursday night summer races and while it is competitive, the focus is fun and friendly rivalry. RTR has always been well represented and for our newer members and those who’ve not raced away from Silksworth, the series is also a great introduction to ski racing at other slopes.
The series
There are usually 5 races in the series, all on a Saturday morning. This year’s dates being:
1. 28th September 2024
2. 2nd November 2024
3. 7th December 2024
4. 1st February 2025
5. 1st March 2025
Practice usually starts at 8.15, racing starts at 9.00 and the event is usually done and dusted by 13.00.
How the racing works
The format is dual slalom and the main difference from the RTR summer series is that at Pendle, the teams compete in age categories; Under 10, Under 13, Under 16, Under 25 and Under 99 and the teams race against other teams in their age category.
Team Selection
The series provides a great opportunity for our less experienced racers to compete alongside and learn from our more experienced racers, with teams being made up of 3 or 4 racers. Selection can be tricky as sometimes we don’t have enough racers to form a team of 3 or 4 in a category, and sometimes we have more than 4 racers registered in a category. In these circumstances, a guide to how we build the teams is:
· Racers registered in a category with less than 3 skiers will move up to the next age category where we have enough skiers to form a team.
· If we have too many skiers in a category, or too few skiers in the next age category up, the oldest skier will be asked to move up a category. If the oldest skier isn’t confident about moving up due to lack of experience, we’ll approach the next oldest.
· If we have 2 skiers moving up due to lack of numbers in their age category, the 2 oldest skiers who would usually compete in the next category up may be asked to move up.
· The exception is the Under 99s who may be asked to ski down a category if we don’t have enough racers in the under 25 category.
We’ll always do our best to ensure that all registered racers have a team, and on occasions where we have enough racers to form more than one team in a category, we’ll do our best to make sure that our teams are well matched.
Pendle really is a great fun series and we hope you find this information useful. We love to see more of our racers dipping their toe in this year so if you’d like to know more or have any questions, please feel free to ask any member of the committee.
